December 13, 2012

Today's agenda:
  • Visit to the library
  • Research time
  • Speech presentations

Hello East House. This is Yareli, again. Today was a relatively simple day, except for the long walk up to the library! As soon as we got to the library, we were asked to check-in with JD and show him our library card, yep, our first grade for the day. Afterwards, we were given simple instructions by Mrs. Ortega and started research. The CalPoly library system had all sorts of technical difficulties. For one, the librarians had to check out our books manually, like in the old days, sounds like a hustle! Second of all, we could not look for books in the databases; therefore some of people had to use some dictionary-looking books to find the books we needed. It took forever to get the call numbers! Personally, I just went floor to floor, looking at all of the shelves until finally, on the 5th floor; I found the books that I needed, yay!
Since all of the groups had been assigned “meeting” times to present their speeches to Mrs. Ortega, we had to be in the room, ready to present. I think the presentations went smoothly since I was not in the room for most of them. At least they are over. Poor Mrs. Ortega, she had to listen to 120 of those! Actually 119…Regardless, I hope you all did well. Remember you were graded on content, delivery and time. I barely finished my speech before she stopped me! I ducked one there! Make sure you all take her comments into consideration and make revisions to your speeches to make them the best they can be.
Oh, and have fun in the first actual day of Model Assembly!

Well, goodnight East House.

December 11, 2012

Today’s agenda:
  • SSR
  • Peer Review and Speech Check
  • Library Info/Mini Lesson: Counter Argument
  • Model Assembly Prep Time!
Hello East House! This is Yareli, and I’m going to be your scribe for the week. Today was a pretty straight-forward day in English class. We started off with SSR, as we usually do. Then, Mrs. Ortega went around seeing if we had brought our peer reviews and a copy of our Pro Bill Speech. She also gave us information about our visit to the library on Thursday. After, she gave us a lesson on how to write counter arguments to include in our speeches. This week, we received three separate grades that count towards the speech writing component: First, we received credit for turning in a speech to turnitin.com. We also received credit if we peer reviewed someone's paper. Note: If you didn't get a peer review, tell Mrs. Ortega ASAP! Or else she won't you give you credit. Today, we received credit for bringing both the peer review and a copy of your speech. If you happened to forget to do any of these, your grade lowered.

We, East House, will be going to the library from 10:22 am to 12:30 pm on Thursday. Mrs. Ortega advised that we arrive at the library no later than 10:35 am. We will meet in the Second Floor, in room 2907. The purpose of this visit to the library is to find senior project research to check out that way, we catch up with research over winter break. You are being graded on bring your I-Poly I.D, being there on time, and having proof of some sort of research by the end of our visit to the library. During this time, Mrs. Ortega will meet with the eight cities, and each group member will have to present their 3-minute pro-speech for Ortega. She will be grading us on 1) Content; whether you do your bill justice and effective use of logos, pathos, ethos and intros. 2) Delivery; make sure you use dramatic appropriateness and expressiveness in your voice to persuade people to vote for your bill. Honestly, just put emotion, but not too much. 3) Time; whether you meet the 2:45 to 3:00 time requirement. Guys, make sure you read and proofread your speeches. Time yourselves; make sure you meet that 3-minute requirement. Read it to your group members, they could offer valuable advice that could make your speech better. Ask someone that is not in your group for help, they might give you a more honest and genuine opinion since they don’t know your bill, they might have some

Here are the schedules for the speech presentation to Mrs. Ortega, I think those were the schedules since I didn't hear Mrs. Ortega mention Walnut...I'll double-check:
  1. 10:45 am – Diamond Bar; Alexa, Amber, Jamilex, JD
  2. 11:00 am – Chino Hills; Alexis, Brittany, Jocelyn, Teo
  3. 11:15 am – Rancho Cucamonga; Arista, Evan, Gabriel, Reann
  4. 11:30 am – Azusa; Cristopher, Danielle, Valerie
  5. 11:45 am – Covina; Gen, Joe, Omar, Yareli
  6. 12:00 am – West Covina; Alfonso, Cynthia, Edwin, Kayla
  7. 12:15 am – El Monte; Alissa, Damaris, Jose, Kendall
  8. 12:30 am – Walnut; Alyssa, Dean, Gina
A#50 - Mini Lesson: Counter Argument:

  • A paragraph within an argumentative/persuasive essay
  • Most often used politically
  • Formula: (opponent’s argument) + However (doesn't necessarily have to be this word, it just serves as a guideline)…(the reason the argument made by the opponent doesn't work.)
  • For example, here’s an argument a person pro-life would make: Parents are responsible for the health and well-being of their minor children in many aspects. Shouldn't they be allowed to advise their daughters on a decision of this magnitude?
  • My counter argument could be: My opponent will tell you that “Parents are responsible for the health and well-being of their minor children in many aspects. Shouldn't they be allowed to advise their daughters on a decision of this magnitude?” (You might noticed that I simply restated the argument previously said by my opponent) Unfortunately (my transitional word), my fellow legislator refuses to take into account that parents are unable or unwilling to offer the guidance a troubled young woman would need at this time in her life (this is my reason why my opponent’s argument doesn't work. You could also add facts/figures/stats to make your argument sound legitimate. Albeit make sure you have your sources, in case you get asked for it.) I really hope that made sense.
Well, goodnight East House. I hope this helped :)

November 30, 2012

Today:

  1. SSR
  2. Daily OpEd
  3. DC Chancellor Pro/Con
Today we read SSR for 20 minutes! Yay! Then we discussed some articles that people read the day before on Daily OpEd. Mostly we focused on the title of the article, because that is what drew us into reading it. Afterwards we received 2 articles that we put into our notebook as DC Chancellor Pro/Con. The articles were about a new chancellor who received a raise of $50,000, and some people felt that this was a waste of money. As a class, we discussed the pros and cons of this raise. For homework, we must read an article on Daily OpEd. One that you find interesting!

November 28, 2012

Today:

  1. SSR
  2. Grover Over
  3. Writing Workshop
Mrs. Ortega did not come today, so our substitute was Mrs. Del Rusa. We did SSR for twenty minutes, no surprise there. Then we read an article titled "Is Grover Finally Over?" (A#44), which is about the downfall of Grover Norquist's ideas. We answered the following questions:
  • What is Bruni arguing?
  • What evidence does he use to support his argument?
  • Draw a square or highlight important sentences.
  • Choose a paragraph and explain the tone purposeful words create.
After that, we did writing workshop. Well, we actually just revised our Model Assembly Timed Writings (A#41).

November 27, 2012

Hey East House! This is Alex Ayala, and I will be your scribe for the week.
  1. SSR
  2. Speech Component
  3. Mini-Lesson Intros
Today, we read SSR as usual. After that, we received our Model Assembly Timed Writings (A#41) and we were introduced to the Speech Component (A#42). To help understand this component, we looked at our editorial picks and looked at their intro sentences. We ourselves tried to make intro sentences to our bills in the Mini-Lesson Intros (A#43). If an intro statement is to be successful, it should have:

  • Shocking and surprising statements
  • An anecdote (something to make it relatable)
  • Something the audience can relate to
  • Quotes (choose wisely and make sure the connection is there)
  • and Questions
Our homework is to write an intro sentence to your bill and to continue looking at the OpEd. Also, Mrs. Ortega forgot to check the notebooks, so she will check next rotation!

Thursday 11/1/12

Crap, well this is really late, but I don't think anyone was absent, so it's all good.

Today
-SSR
-Group Theater
-LC

So once again, we started the class with SSR (shocker! :o). The book competition ends 1/2/12 so make sure to read and report to Ortega.

After SSR, Ortega introduced another option for our LC groups final. It's called Group Theater and for those of you that didn't get a paper explaining what it is, it's basically a radio show type of thing. Like the one we did for Pellegrini after The Most Dangerous Game.

For literature circles, I believe today was the day we should have already been finished with our books. So, start thinking about what you want to do for your final, guise.

I'm pretty sure that's it so, I'll see y'all tomorrow and I promise I'll do it on time this time.

Wednesday October 17,2012

Hey guys, this is Cynthia. Sorry I didn't introduce myself on the prior post. Anyways, here are the following things that we did today:

  • SSR
  • Writing Feedback
  • Writing Workshop
Today, as usual we did started off class with SSR for 20 minutes. Then, we proceeded to input assignments 26(Writing Workshop Draft) and 27(Peer Review) in our composition books. For Writing Feedback, Amber's essay was chosen and I must say that we had excellent feedback from the class! Good job guys! After we gave Amber feedback about her essay, we proceeded to Writing Workshop. In class, people could either correct the essays that they turned in, or peers could review the essays.

Reminders/Homework:
  • LC Prep Discussion is tomorrow (Thursday)
  • Finalized Writing Workshop piece is due October 27th (next Saturday). Make sure you make the necessary corrections!
  • Book House Competition! Make sure you guys read as many books as you can! The book house competition ends at the end of the month, and I believe that we are in the lead!!

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Tuesday October 16, 2012

Today in class we did the following things:

  • SSR
  • Song Parodies
  • LC Discussions
  • Share-out
As usual, we started the class off by doing 20 minutes of SSR. We then transferred to the subject of Song Parodies. Mrs. Ortega first played the song "I Want it that Way", by the Backstreet Boys. Then she played the parody of the song, "E-bay". Mrs. Ortega introduced us to song parodies because at the end of literature circle, everyone will be doing a final assessment, and the song parody can be one form of the final assessment. If your group would like to do something that Ortega hasn't talked about, then you can  talk to her to see if she agrees with the idea presented. If you are going to be doing the song parody, however, you have to follow the rhyme scheme of the song that you are making fun of. For more guidelines, please look at the handout that Ortega passed out during class (A#25 Song Parody Info.) Next, we discussed with our lit. circle groups about our books, and the two v for vendetta groups shared out what was happening in their books so far. Another group that got to share-out was the Persepolis group.

Reminders:
LC Discussion 7 due Thursday
Print out essay you turned in for writing workshop, and also print out the Peermark review someone did for your essay. Bring these two documents tomorrow (Wednesday).

Scribe for Wednesday, 10/10

So here's what we did today in English..

Agenda
  • SSR
  • Peer Review Instructions
  • Writer's Feedback
  • Workshop
  • Independent Study
We started off class with SSR.  Then Mrs. Ortega explained to us how to do peer reviews.  Each person will randomly recieve an anonymous writing workshop piece. The writing workshop piece is due Saturday by 10pm and the peer review is due Sunday by 10pm.
Next, we read Joe's writing workshop piece.  Then a few people gave feedback on what they liked in the paper and suggested things he could change or add.  After that, with only a few minutes left in class, we worked on our writing workshop pieces.

Remember to read those books! Our house is winning right now with 12 books read. Next is South with 8 books, West with 7 books, and North with 4 books.  Let's keep that lead guys!  Also remember that the writing workshop pieces are due on Saturday, so be working on that.  And if you want help from Mrs. Ortega with your piece, feel free to set up an appointment with her so she can read it and give you feedback.

Scribe for Monday 10/9, 1st Rotation

Hey guys, it's Amber and I'll be your scribe for this week!

Agenda for 10/9/12
  • SSR
  • Mini: Textual Evidence
  • LC Discussions
  • Class Share Out

So today in Mrs. Ortega's, we started off class with the usual SSR.  We then put our SSR books away and Mrs.Ortega explained that we would be reading the story of the "Three Little Pigs." Five people volunteered to read a certain character's part (Ex: The wolf, narrator, Pig #1, etc.)  If you were expection the classic version of three little pigs, (I know I was!) then this grim version of the Three Little Pigs may have caught you off guard and taken you by surprise.  After we got through the story, Mrs. Ortega explained to us how to use Textual evidence. (Assignment #20 in our notebooks)  We then had to chose a certain trait a character had in the story and find textual evidence to support it. (Ex: The wolf is naive. The textual evidence to support this would be that the wolf fell for pig #3's tricks every time.)

After the mini lesson, we went on to fill out another day of our membership grid.  The topic for today was, If you could have dinner with any deceased person, who would it be and why?  After our membership grids were filled out for the day, we then began our Literature Circle discussions.

Reminders
  • Don't forget to leave room for Assignment #22, Library Handouts which we will get when we go up to the library.
  • Do LC Discussion Prep 5, Assignment #21 by our next LC discussions on Thursday.
  • If you have recently finished a book, don't forget to inform Mrs. Ortega so she can count it toward our house total for most books read. We need that house point!

Thursday, October 4, 2012

Scribe for Thursday 10/4, Third Rotation!

What's up guys! This is Joe, scribing for the last time.

Well, today's class went by pretty fast since we had a four core rotation. We got in, and started on SSR, buuuuut, some people opted to start with discussions instead*. So we all pulled out our notebooks, and wrote in assignment #19, "Discussion Prep 4". Once that was done, we flipped back to assignment #18, "Discussion Prep 3, and added some more good stuff onto that page. Ortega added elaborated onto what we wrote in last time, explaining some good things to look out for when preparing discussions. After this was all said and done, we moved on to our Membership Grid and discussed our favorite movies in our literature circle groups! I don't know about everyone else's, but my group's discussion was pretty interesting! ("Up" is my favorite movie!)
We moved directly into Literature Circle discussions from there, and stopped right around 20 minutes till class was over to allow time for SSR. Some people decided they wanted to keep discussing, so Mrs. Ortega allowed some to continue. Then class was over!

*Mrs. Ortega let me know that we would be keeping SSR to the beginning of class, as many lost interest in reading right before lunch.

Important things to remember / Homework:
  • If you've noticed that the Poetry Out Loud grade you received on your grading sheet reads something different than that of your progress report, let Mrs. Ortega know. She is aware she made a mistake, so let her know if yours has a problem!
  • Read your LC books, and prepare 4-8 open-ended-ish questions for discussions on Monday!
  • Make sure you let Mrs. Ortega know if you've finished a book, so we can win a house point!
  • Work on your writing workshop pieces continuously, and have somewhat of a first draft to submit for peer review by next Wednesday.

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Scribe for Wednesday 10/3, Second Rotation!

What's up guys! It's Joe again.

As with most ordinary days in Mrs. Ortega's class, we started off with some good 'ol SSR. Afterwards, Ortega reminded us to let her know when we've finished a book, and to not be afraid to let her know during SSR. (Let's get this house point!) Mrs. Ortega also reminded us of the four-core rotation tomorrow; so make sure you read and prepare your questions!

We then pulled our notebooks out, and wrote in assignment #18, "Progress Reports", where we are to tape our progress reports in. After this, we flipped to our peer review pages, and peer reviewed Cris' writing workshop piece, which proved to be a pretty humorous anecdote about his experiences with swimming.

After a few of us shared out about Cris' piece, we begun to work on our own workshop pieces, which we did for the remainder of class. As we worked, Mrs. Ortega came around and checked our notebooks to make sure they were all up to date. She didn't get to everyone, so if she hasn't checked yours yet, make sure yours is complete! She then quickly passed out all of our progress reports, and class was over!

Important things to remember / Homework:
  • We have four-core rotation tomorrow, so make sure you read your LC books, and prepare 4-8 open-ended-ish questions for discussions!
  • Make sure you let Mrs. Ortega know if you've finished a book, so we can win a house point!
  • Work on your writing workshop pieces continuously, and have somewhat of a first draft to submit for peer review by next Wednesday.

Scribe for Tuesday 10/2, First Rotation!

What's up guys! It's Joe. I'll be your scribe for the week. Yeah buddy.

So today, we all got in, got all settled in our literature circle groups, and got ready for story time. Mrs. Ortega read us a (depressing!) storybook called Terrible Things by Eve Bunting (picture shown), which was an allegory for the Holocaust. After the story, we were instructed to discuss the story in our a literature circle groups for a couple minutes. A few people were called on to share out, then we continued on.

We all pulled out our notebooks, and begun to make our "Literature Circle Member Grids", assignment number 16. (*a simple grid with our group members names, and about five rows under them is about all it looks like. If you need any help with it, don't be afraid to ask me!)
After we were finished drawing this in, (without any rulers!), we talked about Highs and Lows of our weekends, and wrote them on our grids to warm us up for our Literature Circle discussions, which we started right after. The discussions took up most of the remainder of the block.

Mrs. Ortega outlined her desired homework criteria for us, which we were to write in on assignment 18, "Literature Circle Discussion 3 Preparations". She wishes for us to come prepared for discussions with four to eight discussion questions, and the pages we read for homework that night.

We then had a couple of people share out about their Literature Circle books, and class was over!

Important things to remember / Homework:
  • Ortega's Finished Book Competition has begun and is only going to span a month, so let's all read as quickly as we can for a house point!
  • Work on your writing workshop pieces continuously, and try to have some sort of improvements on your piece by tomorrow, second rotation.
  • Read your LC books, and prepare 4-8 open-ended-ish questions for discussions on Friday!

Wednesday, 9/26/12

Hi! It's Cristopher Hernandez and here is what we did today in Ortega's:

  • As usual we started with SSR, however this time around Ortega reminded us that we should be reading more outside of class. As the goal is to complete books rather than get a high page count.
  • Next we got our Literature Circle books (V for Vendetta, In the time of Butterflies, Persepolis, or 1984) and we assigned reading.
  • Finally, we received our scores for Poetry Out Loud (Cris and Jamilex were chosen to continue in the competition)

Note: those with graphic novels should e-mail Ortega extra discussion material before Literature Circle discussion (ortega.jen@gmail.com)

Don't forget to complete your first reading assignment by Friday!

Hey East House! (Tuesday Sept. 18, 2012)

Hey East House! It's JD Pabon, and I'll be your scribe for this week! We had a lot to catch up on as Mrs.Ortega was out of town. So here is what we did:

Writing Workshop: We discussed what we will be doing during writing workshop as of now. For example, we had to work on wither our Senior Project timed writing essays, as personal narrative or do the reading autobiography for today's writing workshop. We will receive 30 mins from now on, and will also have other subjects for our writing workshop! Also Mrs. Ortega told us that we can set up an appointment with her for our college essays.

*Will also have to show our work to the class for feedback every writing workshop!

Notebook: We also received our notebook entries 10 and 11. (10: Writing workshop Sept., 11: Writing feedback)

Poetry Outloud: And lastly we worked with a group of 2 or 3 for Poetry Outloud practice. Be prepared to recite them on Wednesday!

Homework: Practice and memorize your poem for Poetry Outloud!

I hoped this helped you guys out, and I'll see you guys on tomorrow!

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Tuesday, 9/11/12

Hey East House, here's what we did today in English in case you forgot:

SSR: Also known as "Shut Up, Sit Down, and Read!" We read for 20 minutes while Mrs. Ortega was recording what people were reading and where they sat.

Assign scribe duty: Right after, Mrs. Ortega introduced the English blog and the way it works. Everyone is required to do one week of scribe duty throughout the year, and any leftover weeks can be done for extra credit. Most people signed up for weeks up until next year. For this week, I'll be your scribe!
*My name is Alfonso by the way, Hi!!! :D

Notebook Setup: We started using our notebooks today, so we set them up with a table of contents that uses 3 columns. The 3 columns were assignment #, title, and page #. We taped those assignments in our notebook, but make sure you SKIP 3 PAGES after the table of contents. The first 5 assignments were as follows in order of page and assignment number:

  1. Class Intro
  2. Mathemagician
  3. TAL: Blackjack Alt. Notes
  4. POL Poem
  5. ABC's ( and D's) of Timed Writing
Intro to Timed Writing/ABC's (and D's): After setting ourselves up, we started on our notes and discussed why timed writing is important. We also learned about a new way to approach timed writing assignments and here's a brief review and the time it should take to get done:

A: Assess the prompt < 1 minute
B: Brainstorm < 5 minutes
C: Choose Order: < 1 minute
D: Discover Errors < 1-2 minutes

Reading Autobiography: We finish off the day with a quickwrite that tests how quick we can write. Our topic for writing was about our earliest memories about reading, and we had (correct me if I'm wrong...) about 15-20 minutes to write.

Homework for today: Practice your poems for Poetry Out Loud, and they will be due by 9/18/12. Have an awesome week and I will see you tomorrow!!!
